Agnes Nasozi Kamya

Agnes Nasozi Kamya is a social anthropologist, writer, and flamenco dancer from Uganda. She has an MEng in Civil Engineering from Imperial College and an MA and PhD in Social Anthropology from Goldsmiths College, University of London.

Her journey into flamenco began while struggling to complete her PhD thesis in 2007.

Although she returned to Uganda, she never lost her desire to move to Spain to improve herdance skills. In 2011 she was able to do so. In 2015, she returned to Uganda to conduct workshops to introduce flamenco where it remains largely unknown. The positive response led her to found the Uganda Flamenco Project which she is reviving at the School of Performing Arts, Makerere University in 2024.

In 2018, Agnes was Keynote Speaker with her presentation, “Interrogating the African origins of flamenco: A view from East Africa” at a conference at the Barry S. Brook Center in New York, which was well received. Agnes’ presentation formed the basis for her article in the anthology “The Body Questions: Celebrating Flamenco’s Tangled Roots” in 2022.

Agnes also wrote the original screenplay for the Ugandan feature film “Imani”, which premiered at the Berlinale in 2010 and is the most-awarded Ugandan feature film to date.

Agnes is a member of AfricaInEs at the University of Granada, an Affiliate Lecturer at the Department of Women and Gender Studies, at Makerere University, and a member of the Centre of Excellence: Gender and African Identities in Research, at the African Research Universities Alliance, ARUA.
